Etsy: Diana Sudyka

Another beautiful Etsy purchase! This is a limited edition print by the Chicago based artist Diana Sudyka.

Dodo, limited edition etching by Diana Sudyka

It’s so beautiful in person, I absolutely love it. It’s away being framed at the moment and will take pride of place in my sitting room when I eventually get it back (left at framers on April 9! They are taking their own sweet time!). The graphite ink used to print the dodo gives it a lovely softness, something which is heightened by the use of a delicate silver for the highlights.

As well as being aesthetically pleasing I like the meaning it contains:

“Dodos are one of the first species in which its extinction was recorded as being directly linked to humans. They are in the family of birds Columbidae that includes all pigeons and doves. The pigeon in the tree is a breed of domestic that has been bred to exaggerate its crest and feet feathers. The piece is sort of about our relationship with a particular species of animal( i.e., how we drive something to extinction, or manipulate it to our aesthetic needs); in this case pigeons.” Diana Sudyka

I first discovered Diana’s work when I stumbled across one of her rock music posters on another site. That was probably a couple of years ago. Never imagined that I would end up owning one of her pieces - hurray for Etsy!

As well as being an illustrator Diana is a bird enthusiast and volunteers at the Chicago Field Museum of Natural History. She posts lots of gorgeous illustrations on her blog, some inspired by the specimens she comes across at the museum, and others that turn up in her back garden. Go check her out!

More Etsy loveliness

The lovely photo from Madelyn’s Etsy store was not the only purchase I made! This gorgeous art block is by an American illustrator called Cathy Nichols and was delivered this week.

Aloft by Cathy Nichols

It’s called ‘Aloft’ and is a fine art print applied to a block of wood 7"x7" in size.

It was one of those images that as soon as I saw it I was instantly charmed. It appeals to the little girl in me:)

I was very pleased with it. The colours are very vibrant - now I just need to decide where to hang it. Right now it’s sitting on my fireplace mantle until I decide where its permanent home should be.

You can check out more of Cathy’s colourful work at the following:

Places like fairgrounds and circuses have always felt liminal to me. Perhaps because of their transient nature, they pull up to some empty field or industrial plot, set up home for a day or two, and then no sooner have they arrived than they disappear again, like a faery market. They are one of those places where you can imagine out-of-this-world, magical things happening. Then you grow up and visiting these places as an adult they tend to be mundane affairs which disappoint but every now and again you come across one that is really special…

Like the all equestrian show I saw in Dublin a few years ago which had horses so beautiful and so highly skilled that it left me incredibly moved or the fabulous Circus Ronaldo and their Commedia dell’arte inspired performances or the wonderful chaos of nofitstate, a promenade show where you had to be fast on your feet or end up as part of the show.

The magic is waiting for you, you just need to know where to look:)

A Grisly Desktop

This is my new desktop graphic. What do you think? It’s a little gruesome, I’ll grant you, but I love it!

The Graveyard Book macbook desktop

It’s for Neil Gaiman’s new novel, The Graveyard Book, due out this October.

This is how the author describes it:

Lots of scary. Some funny (some of the funniest stuff is also the scariest, though). A fair amount of action. Some drama. No kissing. Late nights. Fish and chips. A werewolf, a vampire, an Assyrian mummy and a small pig. A knife in the dark.

And here’s where Neil blogs about Dave McKean’s great bookslip design
