The 2014 Atlanta Mental Health Awareness Week: Towards Better Awareness

The 2014 Atlanta Mental Health Awareness Week organized by NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) was, as usual, eventful. The purpose was achieved, which was to bring more awareness to the public about the stigma of people with mental illness, and how to get rid of this stigma. It was reiterated that one out of four adults in the United States has a mental condition in a year. That is something to contemplate. On events like the mental health awareness week, one will have the opportunity to listen to professionals from the healthcare field talking about the importance of one’s mental well-being and how we must be open-minded to deal with this topic appropriately.


If you are someone who is passionate about being mentally healthy and helping others become aware of it, then here are some tips to help you increase awareness about it in your community.

  • Talk About It With Others. You can start a topic about mental health and how to take care of it, maybe ask others what they do to maintain their mental well-being.
  • Share Your Experiences. You may have a study group or family members that you go out with regularly that you can share your stories. Encourage them to talk about their own experiences as well.
  • Learn More About It. Educating yourself is one way to gain more knowledge about mental illness and suicide. Ultimately, it is vital to know about the signs and symptoms and where and how to get help.
  • Be Open About It To Your Children. Don’t be afraid that they won’t understand – they will if they need to. Depression and suicide don’t only happen to adults but to kids as well.
  • Check In  With Your Friends. Ask them how they’re feeling or what they’re going through. Some people seem like they are handling life well on the outside, but they are breaking inside.



Stigma is a worldwide virus, and the antidotes are awareness, compassion, and understanding. Stigma is curable – your voice can help cure it.
